At Erickson Mediation, our definition of family is based on YOUR definition of family. Family may include parents, spouses, siblings, children, relatives, and friends. Regardless of who makes up your family, each family encounters its own unique challenges and has its own history that can impact their future choices.

Elder Mediation

Aging and living with a disability can cause significant changes in an individual’s needs and the roles of family members. The inevitable affects of aging combined with past family dynamics can be stressful for families and can impact their ability to make the decisions necessary to accommodate changes and transitions.

Common Eldercare Issues:

  • Driving and Transportation
  • Finances and Bill Paying
  • Caregiver Burnout
  • Family member roles and responsibilities
  • Residence Options
  • Guardianships
  • Personal Property Distribution
  • Medical Decisions
  • End of Life decision making

Our elder mediation services can provide families with a structured process for resolving age or disability related conflicts which can surface as elders or disabled adults and their family members are faced with important decisions related to the health, safety, well-being, and financial stability of the elder or disabled adult and can allow for important decisions to be made without putting the elder on-the-spot and asking them to take sides between one sibling or another.

Adult Family Mediation

Conflicts can also arise between siblings or between a parent and their adult child or children, which are not necessarily related to the aging of a parent.

Common Adult Family Issues:

  • Family member roles and responsibilities
  • Family communication
  • Family financial disputes
  • Inheritance, estate, and trust matters
  • Family or Jointly-owned assets, including real estate
  • Family business ownership, including management and succession
  • Long standing family feuds

Decision making between family members can become more difficult because they are accompanied by all the unique complexities which can impact each family member’s ability to make decisions, including, past sibling rivalries, jealously, sense of parent favoritism, grudges, differences in geographic location, and differences in their economic and immediate family structures.

By promoting understanding and addressing the underlying family conflicts, mediation allows families to resolve disputes and make decisions while preserving family relationships.
